Wilkes County History and Genealogy

Wilkes County, in Northwest North Carolina, was formed in 1777 from Surry County and the District of Washington, the act becoming effective February 15, 1778. It was named in honor of John Wilkes, a violent opponent of the Tory party in England who was not allowed to take the seat in Parliament to which he had been elected, because the Patriots in North Carolina, then fighting the Revolutionary War, believed that he was suffering in the cause of liberty like themselves.

A number of the Melungeon core families stopped off for a generation or two in Wilkes County prior to settling on and around Newman's Ridge and Blackwater Creek in what is now Hancock County, Tennessee.

  1. I think my Jones line came through Wilkes Co.,N.C.

I have John Jones born circa 1766/69 married Orpha Gibson b abt 1765 died after 1840, found in her son in law Reuben Lambert's 1840 Taney Co., Missouri census. John Jones and Orpha Gibson married before 1790, John Jones died 1811 in Knox Co.,Ky.
At least two of their sons married into the Isaiah "Cuppy" & Elizabeth (Mason) Collins line. Phebe and Mildred Collins married John K Johns and William Jones.

I descend from Sarah Jane Jones born 1790 Grainger Co.,TN. who married Hugh Lambert in Knox Co.,Ky., her sister Mary Ann Jones married Reuben Lambert. While following the migration pattern of John Jones, these were the other Jones that were migrating in the same direction, same time period. It is speculated that Orpha Gibson is the daughter of Major Gibson who is listed in tax records as FPC or a free mulatto for example, "Old Thomas Collins of Flatt River" article.

John and Orpha (Gibson) Jones had issue:

Sarah Jane Jones m Hugh Lambert
Mary Ann Jones m Reuben Lambert
    John K Jones m Collins
    William Jones m Collins
    Cecly Jones
    Berry Jones
    Young Male 1810 Knox Co.,Ky.,census

I think my John Jones is coming from this line of Jones both Isaac Vincent Jones Jr., and his brother William M Jones passed through Grainger Co.,Tn., and resided in Knox Co.,Ky. same time period as my Jones family line, If not brothers possibly cousins to my John Jones? Isaiah "Cuppy" Collins born in Wilkes Co.,N.C., son of David and Thompsy (Posting) Collins. (Saponi)
